THERE ARE THREE BRIDGES over the river Jhelum at Srinigar of which this is the first. This photograph was taken from the less refined end of The Bund. The junction of the roads over the far side of the bridge is rather like Riby Square at noon. I several times narrowly missed being bowled over by tonga, car, bus or cycle. The double-decker houseboat in the foreground is the Hindu Hotel. The office where we had to register for sugar lies among the mass of buildings across the river. (The form we had to fill in for sugar rations had to be signed in block capitals!)
