A Mobile Decision Support System for MobiGuide
MobiGuide is a European project funded by the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) and coordinated by the University of Haifa (Prof. Mor Peleg). It involves 13 partner organisations (including Haifa) and aims to develop a patient guidance system that integrates patient data from various sources (including hospital medical records and mobile sensor data) to provide decision support to both patients and their care providers. The support provided is both based on the best available evidence as documented in clinical guidelines as well as personalised for each individual patient according to their personal preferences and context. Furthermore, the MobiGuide system is designed to provide support to patients at anytime, anywhere; to achieve this, it comprises two decision support systems amongst other components:
- A mobile decision support system (mDSS) that resides on the patient's smartphone and can operate autonomously to provide guidance to the patient while sending its results to the hospital servers whenever possible for further processing.
- A back-end decision support system that resides on the hospital servers to process the results from the mDSS, to perform complex data processing, to provide decision support to clinicians as well as to project the relevant guideline portions to the mDSS for local execution.
As a member of MobiGuide during my PhD, my main responsibility in this project was to design and develop prototypes of the mDSS. To process the data streams that might originate from sensors around the patient, the mDSS is designed to be data-driven. Furthermore, it adopts the MADE model of pervasive healthcare that was developed as part of my PhD research, such that the guideline portions are realised in the mDSS as instances of four types of processes, namely Monitoring (M), Analysis (A), Decision (D) and Effectuation (E).
