Mother Ludlam was a famous witch and it is believed that the Great Cauldron in the 14th century church at Frensham, Surrey, belonged to her, and was used by her to brew her spells and love philtres. The copper urn is well over 400 years old. It stands on three legs, is a foot deep and nine feet in circumference. Mother Ludlam lived a short way from Frensham, in a sandstone cliff now incorporated in Moor Park, and when the urn was stolen, her powers departed. Later, the urn was placed in the church to prevent further mischief.

Mother Ludlam was not the first owner of the Great Cauldron. It belonged originally to the ‘little people’ who lived in the great stone lying two miles from the church. If this stone were tapped on, the urn could be lent to bring good luck, but only on the condition that it be returned intact within a certain fixed time.

Dear Mr. Pennick,

MEGALITH NEAR KIT’S COTY HOUSE

You will remember that you wrote to us earlier this year expressing concern that a megalith near to Kit’s Coty House had recently been moved and you sent us a map as we were having difficulty in finding the exact location of the site of the stone.

We suspect that the stone was naturally deposited and has recently moved a short distance – possibly again from natural causes. As it is called “Grey Wether” it implies that it was already lying down, like a sheep, and was presumably a block of sarsen that had never been used by the megalith builders or anybody else. As we suspect that this is the case, we cannot take any further action.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Not good enough, Department of the Environment. It appears that they could not find the stone, and are consequently assuming from its name alone that it was ‘natural’. This, of course, begs the question. If megalithic architects had left a prominent stone connected with a geomantic site, then it was left there for a purpose – because it had a function already. Secondly, stones do not move by themselves (except in certain deserts). Orthodox geologists believe such stones were moved by the action of ice (for another opinion, see Immanuel Velikovsky’s Earth in Upheaval). There are no glaciers in Kent to-day. Thirdly, if the Department exists to protect the ‘Environment’, then the removal of a natural stone should be as serious an occurrence as the removal of a humanly-placed one. It is sad that such places are left to the care of remote government bodies who have neither the time nor the money nor the will to protect them. Once an iron fence is erected around the few major stones, then the rest, it seems, can be left to the tender mercies of farmers and vandals, both official and unofficial. ........................................................................................................................

We are people that live and walk on the Earth, we have come to live in a free oasis situated in the centre of the island (Sicily), about 7 km far from the {49} nearest town, about four acres large, to create a NEW VILLAGE IN THE SPIRIT OF THE AQUARIAN AGE. We try to follow with all our forces the path of the GREAT and NARROW ROAD, ILLUMINATION OF GOD, the god of all the Races and People, against sectarianism, but we believe in the TRUTH.

The village will be able to accommodate about 120 persons, who are not all yet there, but we hope will come soon from every part of the world. We are now in the phase, we often get into difficulties that we overcome because we live in LOVE. Many of us are living and working in several parts of Italy, wanting to settle here in a few months. We believe and and hope that many others will choose to live and create with us in this great and free family of AQUARIUS, and that they will arrive soon, because times are bad and we need help. This message is a CALLING FOR HELP THAT WE DO, in the meaning that everyone could send us his brick to build this great house. We would add to our territory a mountain (beside which we live) that is about 70 acres large, with a wide plain dominating half Sicily, 800 meters high, near to an eucalyptus wood.

The mountain is called ARARAT (as Noah’s mountain) and it is a magnetic point at the centre of the island. …

We are vegetarian, we don’t kill animals and don’t work with leather. We are Theosophist, and practise meditation and Yoga and study all religions. We need much money to build all this, and also books, musical instruments, solar plants, records, tapes etc. This is all, and we know that DIVINE PROVIDENCE will help us. We need PEOPLE that could help us to build this future house and village with strong co-operation and in harmony with nature and time’s rhythm, in Peace and Love. Every of good will will be WELCOME.

Dear Nigel, I was happy to see Æthelred’s article in the Journal. It was the best issue I’ve received I think. I was taken by your article on boundaries, seeing it through Blake’s words about the bounding outline that distinguishes and brings to identity an existence in Eternity. Though Blake doesn’t mention or use the term parish, he is continually in the fiery intellect. And also there with him is the dragon-formed youthful fire Orc.

I noticed the official reply to the resurrection of the Avebury stones. The question of their bona fide existence is in a sense beside the point. Albion everlastingly is asleep to be awakened.

I’ve wanted to mention also a book that speaks of Avebury’s earthen circle being filled with water once. Perhaps you are familiar with it already. It is The Light of Britannia by Morien, published about a hundred years ago, I think. It strikes me of a sudden that she is Jerusalem, that is, She the Avebury monument who appears on the last plate ef Blake’s Jerusalem.

Æthelred just wrote a book entitled ALBION AWAKE! It’s published by Golgonooza: The Church and School of William Blake. Æthelred, in the book speaks in the voice of the Parson, and has him telling stories like The Parson’s Penny Whistle, and The Parson meets Arthur. Aside from that he is literal inventor of the place here in Ohio, Æthelred, that is.
