I SURVEY THE WORLD from the sun deck of the houseboat, a photograph taken on the eve of our return from leave. The building in the background is the Hotel Savoy and from the tent which can just be seen came the strains of Dr. Jazz and his Swing Combo doing their stuff. Among so much natural beauty it all seemed very incongruous. The hill in the background is the one from which I tried to take the photograph on the next page. Crowned with a Hindu temple it rises to a height of 1,000 feet above lake level and dominates Srinigar.
