More Welsh
Two-thousands (Rucksack Club Journal, 1954,
Vol. xii, p. 276)
There was considerable excitement amongst the
peak-baggers at the Plynlimon meet when two two-thousands were discovered,
which are not in the lists. (Rucksack Club Journal 1940 and 1952.)
These tops have single contour rings on the new Seventh Series Edition of
the Ordnance Survey one-inch map but are not marked on the Popular Edition, on
which the lists were based. For the new map all the contours have been redrawn
and this has produced many changes.
There are eight new tops (listed below) with contour rings
on the map; most of them are, of course, obvious enough on the ground without
the assistance of maps. The new top near Bwlch Main, half a mile south of
Snowdon summit, is a conspicuously sharp little peak (3050+) which
should be included in the Welsh Three-thousands walk. Allt Lwyd had no contour
ring on the Popular Edition but has two rings on the new map.
Many heights in Snowdonia, but none farther south, are
increased by one foot. Mercifully Gallt yr Ogof remains 2499. Seventeen
tops have lost their contour rings but it is not proposed to list them.
The new map is no more consistent than the old one, for
several prominent peaks have no contour rings on it. Pen Helig, for instance,
unmistakably a peak on the ground and with two contour rings on the old map,
has none on the new.
It is, of course, convenient to use the map as a standard but the claims
of many tops can really only be decided on the spot.
