Alinement of Stowe Avenue, Bucks. (AW)

View

These two alinements are given in The Old Straight Track, page 36.

ALINEMENT OF STOWE AVENUE.

Stowe Avenue, if extended on a map, alines to, and is therefore sighted on, the Royal mound of Windsor Castle, the alinement passing through Fleet Marston, Hartwell, and Great Kimble churches, Kings Wood, and Eton. Before dismissing this as an accidental coincidence, it is well to consider the fact that the alinement of another long, straight road, which bisects Stowe Park at a different angle, passes exactly through the sites of six churches to the south-west—namely, Fringford, Caversfeld, Weston, Yarnton, Longworth, and Ogbourne St. George. I have found several park avenues in my own neighbourhood to be on ancient straight-sighted trackways—Mr. Alfred Watkins, 5, Harley-court, Hereford.
