Bull ring: what area was enclosed? (W.A.)

View

(4,574) Bull Ring.—In many English towns, Ludlow and Birmingham for instance, and villages, as Kingstone, Herefordshire, are open spaces at the junction of streets or roads which to-day bear the place-name of “The Bull Ring.” What would be the approximate size of the ring referred to? A large animal like a bull would seem to require a fair space for baiting with dogs, the “sport” carried on at these places.—W. A.
