THE TWO-THOUSANDS OF ENGLAND
(EXCLUDING THE LAKE
DISTRICT)
By E. Moss
(Rucksack Club
Journal, 1939, Vol. IX, p.184)
Several years ago, W. T. Elmslie (Journal of
Fell and Rock Climbing Club, 1933, Vol.9, p.344) published a list of the
two thousand footers of England based on the half-inch Bartholomew Map, which
has contours at 250 feet intervals. More recently F. H. F. Simpson (Wayfarers'
Journal, 1937, No.5, p. 18) has compiled a similar but more detailed table
covering the Lake District and based on the one-inch Ordnance Survey Map, which
has contours every 50 feet. The present article extends the work of Simpson to
those parts of England not covered by his list.
The definition adopted is similar to that first
applied by J. R. Corbett (Rucksack Club Journal, 1937, Vol. VI, p.337)
to twenty-fives, namely, all tops of 2000 feet or over marked by a separate
contour ring on the one-inch Ordnance Survey Map, Popular Edition. In addition,
a few tops not honoured with a separate contour ring, but which are distinct
rises, have been included, e.g., Fairbrook Naze. As Corbett has pointed
out, a rise of 5 feet may be contoured on the map if it occurs at the right
level, while a rise of 45 feet may not achieve a contour. The number of
two-thousands in England excluding the Lake District is 152, or, if the latter
region be included, the grand total is 377.
The
above definition leads occasionally to the inclusion of small rises represented
on the map by only a single contour ring, and with neither a name nor a height
shown. A restricted definition of two-thousands suggested to me by G. A. Deane
excludes all such tops, of which there are thirty in the present list. These
minor tops are printed in italics for the convenience of those collectors who
do not wish to bother with them. Most of the minor tops would, however, be
visited naturally in traversing the ridges connecting major two-thousands.
The grouping of the tops is to some extent
arbitrary. In the Central Pennine region, the various dales have been used as
convenient nuclei. Some liberties have been taken in naming, when there is no
indication on the map. Where the top is referred to as a Point followed by a
compass bearing, the latter is the approximate direction of the Point from the
top immediately preceding it in the list. The third column in the table
indicates the one-inch Ordnance Survey sheet on which each top is to be found,
together with its position on the map in terms of the lettered and numbered
grid.
