APPENDIX III

NOTES BY MR. ARTHUR LAWTON ON GEOMETRICAL ARRANGEMENT OF SITES ON BEAULIEU HEATH, HAMPSHIRE.
6-inch Map LXXX N.E.

Attention is drawn to a very large number of instances of the use of standard distances between certain sites connected with prehistoric settlement. A number of examples of equidistances—very commonly found all over the country—appear on this map. They occur between pairs of Tumuli, Fords, Cross-roads, Churches, Camps, Stone Circles, Monoliths and the like.

The distance of 5702·4 feet is equal to 3750 cubits of 1·52064 feet, or 600 reeds of 9·504 feet. The occurrence of many ancient Wells in this arrangement suggests a common origin in the derivation of the sites—possibly the existence of a cosmic force unrecognized to-day but utilized in dowsing, and that the distribution of this force is the basis of the ancient system of measurement, such sites having desirable features not found elsewhere. Significance is attached to the Number 6.
